Oil Palm Farming Guide

Complete Commercial Palm Oil Production & Export Manual

Introduction to Oil Palm Farming

Oil palm farming is one of the most profitable plantation agribusiness ventures in tropical regions. Oil palm produces palm oil and palm kernel oil, widely used in food processing, cosmetics, biodiesel, and industrial products.

Climate & Soil Requirements

Oil palm thrives in humid tropical climates with consistent rainfall distribution.

Planting & Spacing

Plant improved hybrid seedlings from certified nurseries. Proper spacing ensures high yield and reduces disease spread.

Recommended spacing: 9m triangular system (approx. 143 palms per hectare).

Field Management

Fertilization

Regular soil testing and balanced NPK fertilizer application improves bunch yield.

Weed & Pest Control

Integrated Pest Management helps control rhinoceros beetles and other common pests.

Pruning

Remove old fronds to improve harvesting access and plant health.

Harvesting

Oil palm begins fruiting 2.5–3 years after planting. Fresh fruit bunches (FFB) are harvested every 10–14 days once mature.

Harvesting must be timely to maintain oil quality.

Palm Oil Processing

Fresh Fruit Reception

FFB must be processed within 24 hours to prevent quality loss.

Sterilization & Threshing

Steam sterilization loosens fruits for oil extraction.

Oil Extraction

Mechanical pressing separates crude palm oil from fiber and nuts.

Profitability & Market Opportunities

Oil palm is one of the highest oil-yielding crops per hectare globally. Well-managed plantations produce 20–25 tons of fresh fruit bunches per hectare annually.

Value addition includes refining, biodiesel production, and export of crude palm oil (CPO).
