Pig Breeds Guide

Choosing Genetics for Efficient Pork Production

Why Breed Selection Matters

Different pig breeds vary in growth rate, litter size, carcass leanness, meat quality and tolerance to heat or disease. Using the right combination of pure breeds and crossbreeds allows farmers to match animals to their climate, feed resources and market requirements.

  • Traits: Long body, high litter size, good milk production.
  • Use: Strong maternal breed, ideal for prolific sows.

Duroc

  • Origin: United States.
  • Traits: Excellent feed conversion, good marbling and meat quality.
  • Use: Often used as terminal sire for meat production.

Pietrain

  • Origin: Belgium.
  • Traits: Very muscular, high lean yield, lower fat cover.
  • Use: Terminal crossbred boars where lean carcasses are rewarded.

Crossbreeding Strategies

Most commercial systems use crossbred pigs (e.g. Large White × Landrace sows mated to Duroc or Pietrain boars) to combine maternal traits with fast, lean growth. Heterosis (hybrid vigor) improves survival, growth and carcass quality compared to many purebred lines.
